CHARLES
AHART
By Victoria
As far as I know, Charles Ahart appeared at Wainwright House
in Rye, New York, and began giving meetings of what he called “The
Work.” In my twelve years with him, I never found out how
he had contacted the Gurdjieff Work or his knowledge of Steiner.
We knew he had come out of the 12 Steps
of AA and left that program
because he said, “For the most part they were trying to
stay away from
one drink, one day at a time.” He said that
the 12 Steps instructions were a very far-reaching and comprehensive
program of Self-Discovery and Realization.
Charles Ahart saved the lives of those in his program through
the Amazing Grace he attracted, and there were miracles and wonders.
He wanted nothing for himself, never asking for money, or accolades,
or greater numbers, or fame or any material glory. He was completely
accessible and would sometimes be on the phone from early in
the morning and deep into the night. He taught anywhere from
one to three meetings every week (some 5 hours long) for 25 years.
His mission was to teach “teachers of teachers,” and
in order to be accepted into the program one had to agree to
his mission. He brought Knowledge, pushed people with practices,
and filled his students with incredible Vision. He was not an
easy man to bear because he had no interest in material life
on Earth and hardly ever went out or engaged in social activities,
but when one spoke to him (if there was willingness) the experience
was of entering a world that was real, full of light, intimacy
and the wonder of being together.
